Burger

Burgers are certainly not what they used to be, the days of a greasy bun dripping with onion and sloppy cheese. Now burgers are all glossy buns, homemade spicy coleslaw and pulled pork fillings.

I'm not a big burger person myself, but my husband does go slightly crazy over the culinary delights Edinburgh has to offer burgerwise. Which is the reason we found ourselves at Burger on Shandwick Place this week.

(Incidentally they are also in Fountainbridge and St Andrews )

It's a great place to take kids - there's loads of room, friendly accommodating staff and a brilliant children's menu available with vegetarian options too. I ordered the bacon and cheese burger which was lush and not the size of my head ( as you can order the size - small, large or double I think it was ) which made the burger a lot easier to eat than I've found with some places and not as overwhelming. I also ordered a side of coleslaw which was gorgeous and my husband actually ate it ( he counts coleslaw as a form of salad so therefore a waste of chewing time! ) we also got the chilli beef fries which were huge and lovely.

It does mention on the menu that the burgers are cooked from scratch so it may take some time, however, I don't think we waited more than 10 - 15 minutes for all of our food which was great. Though it wasn't overly busy on a Tuesday at lunchtime it's worth mentioning there were loads of people coming in for take away orders which is a genius idea.

Drinkswise there are the usual floats, milkshakes and juice available as well as beer, cider and wine, but its the alcoholic milkshakes you have got to try! I ordered the Caucasian which was a blend of vanilla frozen custard ice cream, Kahlua ( an old favourite of mine ) vodka and a few other things whacked in which was gorgeous and not too strong for 1pm in the day midweek with a toddler to look after. My husband ordered the Bourbon Banoffee which was

just as gorgeous as it sounds, but slightly stronger than mine, ( its a good thing he had ordered a huge burger to eat beforehand!) A burger is never my first choice when I go out for a meal, however, I think Burger may just have converted me. I'm not just saying that for the milkshakes either, though they are worth going for alone! I should mention Burger also does salads, gorgeous sounding hot dogs and specials such as Mac n Cheese along with a huge lists of sides on offer. The really great thing about Burger though is that you can add anything you want to your Burger - and this is actually mentioned to you when taking your order, so no rolling of the eyes when you want extra cheese, bacon, or chilli even added to your order.

All up Burger is a great place to take kids, grannies, a date, your best bud or your next door neighbour. The service is friendly, loads of seating, great menu and a good price, just tell them, the kid who goes mental when he eats sugar sent ya. That's sure to raise a smile.
